Author Vince Flynn Dies

Vince Flynn, author of the popular Mitch Rapp spy novels, passed away this week after a battle with cancer.  His Mitch Rapp series is about a CIA counter terrorism operative.

FCC Proposal Would Benefit the Visually Impaired

The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) has proposed cable and television menus all be equipped to read out loud to users, to benefit those with low or no vision.  The proposal extends to most functions of televisions, such as volume control or channel information.  The proposal should be finalized by October.

Subregional Library of the Year

The Brevard County Talking Book Center was recently named 2013 Network Subregional Library of the Year, an award given by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.  The award is given annually and comes with a $1,000 prize.

Debra Martin, the librarian at Brevard County TBC, says she may use the prize money to buy an iPad so she can train patrons how to use it.

"The Week" Subscribers

If you receive The Week as a digital magazine from the Talking Books program, you will automatically receive The Economist for the next two months.  If you like The Economist and wish to continue your subscription, please contact your Talking Book library.  If you do not contact your library, you will stop receiving The Economist after two months.

Mobile Bookstore to Tour Country

The Penguin Group debuted their first mobile bookstore yesterday, a bright orange truck filled with over 1000 books.  The truck is currently in New York City, with plans to tour Chicago, Oklahoma, and California.  The bookstore truck also features LED lighting and a large awning to make it stand out.

Reddy Health Fair

Reddy Medical Group will host a public health fair on June 15 from 8:00am - 11:00am.  They will offer EKG, stroke testing, bone density, body composition, blood pressure checks, and lab work for free or at low cost.  They will accept cash only at the fair.

Hope Haven Fundraiser

Hope Haven, a local nonprofit that provides services for those with developmental disabilities, will host a fundraiser next Saturday.  The fundraiser is designed to replace some cut state funding for housing clients.

Kindle for iOS Accessibility

The Kindle App for Apple (iPad, iPhone, etc) has recently been updated to include accessibility features that make it more user-friendly for the visually impaired.

Digital "Talking Book Topics"

Talking Book Topics, the bi-monthly catalog of new Talking Book titles, is now available in digital format.  Patrons who previously received the cassette version will automatically receive the digital version.  There are some changes in the service that you should be aware of:

  • The book cartridge will arrive separately from the order form
  • The order form should be returned to your Talking Book library, and the cartridge should be returned to the producer
  • You MUST return the catalog within one month or your subscription may be delayed or cancelled
  • You may receive both a cassette and a digital copy for the first few months
Talking Book Topics is available in large print, digital, and download formats.
